We don't take the time to reflect and to put events in a larger context. We make sense of actual events by encorporating them into our virtual worlds.

I know this because this theme is repeated throughout the article.

It appears that the article emphasizes how technology is taking over the minds of individuals. There are both pros and cons to the new age of technology. One pro is that individuals have immediate access to all events that occur in the world, both positive and negative. In addition, individuals have access to information when needed such as maps, telephone numbers, directions, etc. One con is that people depend so much on technology they would be lost if they do not have it. Years back, there used to be pay phones on the side of the roads. Today, they are all eliminated. Therefore, if someone accidentally left their cell phone home and needed assistance, they would not have access to any sort of communication.

Finally, today the use of technology is so crucial that when it is threatened, individuals panic. Pierce (2010) describes the example of the Y2K. “In 2000, the Y2K glitch was going to send us tumbling back down through the technological dark ages to those dim times when nobody could sit at their desks and bet on football or surf for porn.”

Technology plays a major role in today’s society. All people from different backgrounds and careers rely on technology. Without it would greatly impact the world today.

Pierce is the profound impact technology has had on people, both individually and collectively, over the last ten years.

The first clue about the meaning of the article is in the introduction: “Before we head into the next decade, let’s take a moment to consider the last ten years. Both because they produced such unpredicted havoc – and because they produced us.” Clearly someone reading an article of this complexity in Esquire Magazine was not born in the last ten years, so the author cannot mean that we are literally a product of the last ten years. This leaves the reader waiting to discover what metaphorical means the last decade has had of producing us.

From the first sentence, the author discusses technology, specifically televisions and computer screens. Throughout the article he continues to site different forms of technology, its consistent evolution to become faster and more advanced, and how the more immediate the access people have to new information via technology, the more it changes the way people think and the way they live their lives.

Once the author has clearly illustrated the vast advance in access to worldwide news and information from the year 2000 to the year 2010, he tells the reader the significance of these details: “we live our lives through things, not in them…we live vicariously through our little machines.” It is not only the breadth and instantaneous delivery of information that technology provides that changes us. It is the fact that because we can access so much different information, we become lost and confused. While some may think that the more information a person have the more clearly he will understand something, this article states that so much information has left us overwhelmed and confused, living lives of a muddled reality.
The article’s title references the last decade and all of the astonishing events that have taken place such as Mr. Southard running a PD day. The author took a look at the past 10 years or so and briefly described several major events that took place. The emphasis however, was not put on the events themselves, but rather on human’s perspective of these events. The article stressed our obsession with technology. Obsession that has gone past a potentially normal or healthy stage and is lingering on being insane. The author pointed out that we presently live a world where we can be “there” without actually being “there”. By living in this virtual world, we not only have adapted to virtual communication as norm, but also instantaneous feedback. It’s only during times of monumental disaster where we are momentarily torn from the virtual lightning fast Iphone world and placed on solid ancient dirt. The problem here is that we only stay on this solid ground temporarily and leave all too soon. We leave before we truly make a connection or even evaluate the significance of the event that occurred.
